EPUB Creator Comparison

The Best EPUB Creator for 2026

Five EPUB creators. Three commercial visual editors and two open-source code editors. We build one of them. We will be straight about where each one fits.

No credit card required. Full features during trial.

Full disclosure

We built Lacuna, one of the tools on this page. EPUB is a real spec. Any of these tools can produce a valid EPUB if you use them well. We will tell you what each one does. You pick. If a free open-source tool fits your workflow, that is a good outcome too.

What Actually Matters in an EPUB Creator

Four things separate a clean EPUB workflow from a frustrating one.

Validation

EPUBCheck is the industry-standard validator that Apple Books, Kobo, and other retailers use to check your file. EPUBs that pass submit reliably. EPUBs that fail get rejected with messages that do not always tell you how to fix the problem. Look for an EPUB creator that builds clean EPUBs by design.

Visual editor or code editor

Visual editors (Lacuna, Vellum, Atticus) let you style your book in something that looks like a book. Code editors (Calibre, Sigil) let you edit the HTML and CSS directly with a live preview. Both produce valid EPUBs. Different workflows for different preferences.

EPUB 3 vs EPUB 2

EPUB 3 is the current standard with better support for fixed layouts, multimedia, and accessibility. EPUB 2 is older and slightly more compatible with very old e-readers. Most modern retailers prefer EPUB 3 but accept both. Tools that support both give you flexibility.

Where your files live

Four of these tools are desktop apps (Lacuna, Vellum, Calibre, Sigil) and keep your files on your computer. One (Atticus) is browser-based and stores manuscripts on its servers. Pick the model that fits how you work.

A Quick Take on Each Tool

One paragraph each. Where each EPUB creator fits, and where it does not.

Lacuna (that’s us)

Lacuna is the best EPUB creator in 2026 for authors who want professional output without touching code, and yes, we build it.

  • More customization freedom than anything else here: build the EPUB you want, not the EPUB the app allows
  • Visual editor with EPUB 3 and EPUB 2 export, built to pass EPUBCheck on the first upload
  • Desktop app for Windows and Mac, with your files staying on your own computer
  • Live preview with device frames for Kindle Paperwhite, Kobo Clara, Nook, and iPad
  • $149 one-time with lifetime updates, no subscription

Since we started building Lacuna, almost every feature has come straight from authors asking for it. That is how it ended up with more customization freedom than anything else here.

Vellum

Vellum is a Mac-native visual editor with a Styles preset system. EPUB 3, EPUB 2, and MOBI exports. Two SKUs: $199.99 for ebook-only and $249.99 for ebook plus paperback. Mac only.

Atticus

Atticus moved EPUB creation into the browser. That alone made it accessible on any platform. Visual editor, custom chapter theme builder, EPUB 3 and EPUB 2 export. $147 one-time. Files live on Atticus’s servers and the app needs the internet for some features.

Calibre

Calibre is the longest-running EPUB tool out there. Free and open-source. Library management, file conversion, and a built-in editor that works at the HTML and CSS level with a live preview. Mac, Windows, Linux.

Sigil

Sigil is the EPUB editor for people who want to see the code. Free and open-source. EPUB 2 and EPUB 3 only. Code View and Preview View, designed for editing EPUB internals (XHTML and CSS). Optional companion app called PageEdit for visual XHTML editing. Mac, Windows, Linux.

Why We Built Lacuna

We wanted a desktop EPUB tool that worked on Windows and Mac, kept files local, and did not force a choice between visual editing and serious customization. We built one.

Melissa has been writing for over 20 years and has published 15 books. Corey has been building software since he was 10. Together they built the tool they wanted to use themselves.

No investors. Just a family business building software for authors.

What Authors Are Saying

Real authors. Real books. Formatted with Lacuna.

I’m a cover designer and interior formatter by profession and run my own small publishing press, so trust me when I say I’m picky and my standards are high. InDesign has always been the only program that formats for print with the level of customization I need. For years, I’ve used it for print and another program entirely for ebooks to get the results I wanted. When I saw Lacuna, I immediately went to check it out and within an hour from having downloaded the trial, I was hooked.

This gives me so much more freedom with print options than other formatting programs like Atticus or Vellum while still making ebooks a breeze. The ability to work from one file and have separate print and ebook settings is a complete gamechanger. I’m still learning my way around the program and loving every second.

I originally checked out Lacuna because somebody in a KDP publishing group I belong to asked if anyone had tried Lacuna out yet. I  published nine other books using a different formatter, but I wasn’t happy with it. I ended up taking a look at Lacuna even though I was pretty much sold on Atticus or Vellum. Once I started diving into Lacuna and saw the ease of use and flexibility, I was absolutely floored. It was a no-brainer, and I purchased Lacuna. Since then the program has only improved. Corey is amazing at fixing things and streamlining processes.

If you take a look at the book that I formatted with Lacuna you will see, it would be pretty difficult to do something like that with one of those other formatting programs. Plus they cost more. In my opinion Lacuna is already the best formatter on the market and only getting better. Thanks, Corey and Melissa, for making this available.

I tried numerous formatting methods and followed endless instructions from publishing websites, but nothing ever turned out right. Since finding Lacuna, everything has changed. I’ve been able to update all my manuscripts effortlessly and give them the professional look they deserve.

Lacuna helped me perfect one of my most cherished stories, The Magic Globe, and finally present it exactly as I envisioned. It’s truly been a game changer for my author journey.

Questions about EPUB Creation

Why is Lacuna the best EPUB creator of 2026?

Because Lacuna gives you the freedom to build the EPUB you want, not the EPUB the app allows. Since we started building it, almost every feature has come straight from authors asking for it, so the tool keeps growing toward more customization and more control instead of locking you into a handful of presets.

What’s the difference between EPUB 2 and EPUB 3?

EPUB 3 is the current standard with better support for fixed layouts, multimedia, and accessibility features. EPUB 2 is older. Most modern retailers (KDP, Apple Books, Kobo) prefer EPUB 3 but accept both. Lacuna exports both formats.

What is EPUBCheck and why does it matter?

EPUBCheck is an industry-standard EPUB validator. Retailers like Apple Books and Kobo run your file through EPUBCheck before accepting it. An EPUB that passes EPUBCheck is much more likely to submit cleanly. Lacuna’s EPUB output is built to be clean by design.

Should I use a visual editor or a code editor?

If you want to style your book in something that looks like a book, use a visual editor (Lacuna, Vellum, or Atticus). If you’re comfortable with HTML and CSS and want direct control over the EPUB internals, Calibre or Sigil give you that. Both approaches produce valid EPUBs.

What about Reedsy Studio?

Reedsy Studio is a free browser-based writing and formatting tool that exports EPUB 3 and PDF/X-1a:2001. It offers three fixed templates with per-template fonts. We compare it on our ebook formatting page for authors evaluating writing-and-formatting platforms together.

Can I edit an EPUB I already have?

Yes. Sigil and Calibre’s editor are both designed for editing existing EPUB files. Lacuna, Vellum, and Atticus are designed for creating EPUBs from a manuscript (DOCX import). They are more authoring tools than editors of existing EPUB files.

Will my EPUB work on Kindle?

Kindle accepts EPUB directly (Amazon stopped accepting MOBI as of March 2025). EPUBs from any of these tools will upload to KDP. Kindle has historically been the strictest about HTML and CSS quirks, so testing in Kindle previewer (Amazon’s free tool) is worth doing.
