The Haunting of Kenmore Asylum

by JJ Carpenter

I’m a cover designer and interior formatter by profession and run my own small publishing press, so trust me when I say I’m picky and my standards are high. InDesign has always been the only program that formats for print with the level of customization I need. For years, I’ve used it for print and another program entirely for ebooks to get the results I wanted. When I saw Lacuna, I immediately went to check it out and within an hour from having downloaded the trial, I was hooked.

This gives me so much more freedom with print options than other formatting programs like Atticus or Vellum while still making ebooks a breeze. The ability to work from one file and have separate print and ebook settings is a complete gamechanger. I’m still learning my way around the program and loving every second.

I am always there.
Perhaps I always have been?
Perhaps there is no end for me…

1910
The mentally unwell are considered dangerous and a blight to be kept hidden from family and society. The recently opened Kenmore Asylum is bursting at the seams. Amidst the churn, Nurse Harriet tries to make a real impact on her charges. But one of them, Alice, seems beyond anyone’s help…

1950
Bonnie is a fresh, determined nurse trainee, out to prove herself and make her way into the world. But nothing is as she expected when the shadows are rife with the spirits of those who haven’t walked the halls of Kenmore in a very long time.

2021
The notoriously haunted Kenmore Asylum stands abandoned behind an easily circumnavigated fence. YouTube ghost hunters Aiden and Devin seek fame and fortune behind its walls—but something else just might find them first.

I was using Atticus for formatting. It was ok. But I do a lot of photo restoration in my family legacy books. And I also needed more custom formatting. Atticus lacked in photo quality as well as advanced design options. Lacuna clearly was the winner and I’m a new fan!

Cover of Decode Their Behavior Avoid Toxic Connections

Decode Their Behavior Avoid Toxic Connections

by Paulette Napper Hartfield, MA, C-DBT, LMHC

I had tried so many different sites and softwares to try and get my book formatted correctly and nothing worked until I came across Lacuna. Once I reviewed the YouTube videos and the step-by-step tutorials, a light bulb came on and everything started coming together. I was able to add call boxes, pictures, italics, and even my music links throughout my book finally worked correctly using Lacuna. This will definitely be my go to formatting tool because I’m sure there is much more I can learn to do with Lacuna to enhance the quality of my books. As a result of using Lacuna, I am now a published author.

Most people don’t realize they’re in a toxic connection until they’ve already lost pieces of themselves. It rarely starts with chaos. It starts with charm, attention, intensity, or the feeling of being seen in a way you’ve been craving for years. By the time the confusion begins, the emotional investment is already deep -- and the behavior that once felt comforting now feels destabilizing, unpredictable, or unsafe. This book was created for the moment you start to question what’s happening. Not months later. Not after the damage. Right now -- while you’re still trying to make sense of the shift.

Cover of Screw it. Keep Going

Screw it. Keep Going

by Frank Beechinor

This is my first book and my first time using book publishing software. I was dreading the phase when I had to typeset my book. I needn’t have worried. Lacuna was so easy to use and the fact that I could set my printed book and ebook in one application was a fantastic bonus. The features in Lacuna are really powerful and give you everything you need to format your manuscript for publication. I had no previous experience of book formatting software but was able to get my head around the features in no time. Lacuna saved me a lot of money compared to paying a designer to typeset my book. And it is so easy to make corrections and generate updated editions I highly recommend Lacuna!

Then cancer came back.

This time, his own.

With a foreword by cycling legend Sean Kelly, Screw It. Keep Going. is not your typical cancer memoir.

It is a brutally honest, darkly funny, and deeply human story about grief, prostate cancer, heart disease, love, loss, second chances, terrible decisions, ridiculous cycling disasters, and why riding a bike sometimes becomes the thing that keeps you moving when life falls apart.

Readers keep saying they laughed, cried, and couldn’t put it down.

From hospital rooms and scan results to long roads, sleepless nights and impossible rides, this is the story of what happens when life repeatedly knocks you down—and the stubborn decision to keep turning the pedals anyway.

Because sometimes that’s all you can do.

And sometimes it’s everything.

Cover of Bitcoin Mining with Bitaxe

Bitcoin Mining with Bitaxe

by Greg Weir

I’ve been using Lacuna since January 2026 to format all of my books, and it’s become an essential part of my publishing workflow. The software produces clean, professional output that looks as good as anything coming out of expensive Mac-only alternatives.

What really sets Lacuna apart, though, is the support. Corey responds to emails with a speed that’s almost unsettling — often the same day, sometimes within hours. When I ran into issues with bulleted list imports, image embedding, chapter detection, and PDF formatting artifacts, he didn’t just acknowledge the problems — he fixed them, usually in the next release. I’ve never felt like a ticket number.

I also appreciate that Lacuna is a small, family-run operation. I’d rather support a business that actually listens to its users than a venture-backed company treating authors as a market segment.

The First Complete Guide to Bitaxe and Open-Source Bitcoin Mining

Build, run, and understand your own open-source Bitcoin miner with a practical guide designed for home miners, hobbyists, and technical readers.

If you want to truly understand Bitcoin mining—not just plug in a machine and hope—this is the book for you.

Bitaxe has ignited a revolution: small, quiet, affordable, fully open-source Bitcoin miners that anyone can verify, modify, and operate at home.

Until now, mastering Bitaxe meant digging through Discord chats, GitHub repos, fragmented tutorials, and scattered forum posts.

This book changes everything.

Cover of Walk In. Own It. Book It

Walk In. Own It. Book It

by Bob Gatchel

I used Lacuna to finally get my book “Walk in. Own it. Book it.” published.  It’s been a passion project of mine, but I dreaded fighting with Amazon KDP and just held it of.  But Lacuna helped me take these and idea and get my book published.

In a surprisingly short time, my manuscript was KDP-ready on the first pass. No rejections, no fiddling, no re-uploads. Building the table of contents was painless, and the endnotes came out clean without any wrestling—two things I’d braced myself for based on past experience.

What surprised me most was how fast I got comfortable with it. There was barely a learning curve. I wasn’t hunting through menus or watching tutorials. I was just working. That meant all my energy went where it belonged: editing, tweaking, and getting the book published.

I have zero patience for software that fights me. Lacuna doesn’t. It gets out of the way and lets you focus on the book. If you’re publishing anything with real structure to it, it’s worth every penny.  And thanks to Lacuna making the publishing process easy, I’m already thinking of my next book!

Here’s the dirty secret nobody told you when you became an actor.

The people booking work aren’t necessarily more talented than you. Sometimes they’re less talented. So why do they book and you don’t?

They have a system. A repeatable, professional approach that turns auditions from nerve-wracking lottery tickets into the engine of a long-term career — more bookings, more re-bookings, and more time doing the art you love.

In Walk In. Own It. Book It., actor and coach Bob Gatchel hands you the system the industry never bothered to write down — one he forged in the trenches across stages, on camera, behind the microphone, and on both sides of the audition room. No theory. No “manifest your dream role.” Just the hard-won professional playbook.

Margin Walker: A LitRPG Novel

by Timothy Bonner

Margin Walker is a story held together by complex formatting — fonts, callout boxes, tables. When your novel has AI chat narration, system messages, stat blocks, and traditional prose, you need software that can handle all of it. Lacuna took my vision and made my debut a reality; it made the process of idea to ebook and print seamless.

A burned-out English teacher wants to survive a world where stories are now reality, but the AI running it only keeps characters worth reading about. In the Crucible, his success hinges on writing something worth keeping, as the boring get incinerated.

Apiolitis and Other Stories

by Henthrik Richard Devakumar

I’m one of those people who do a lot of research into the tools I use, and check each of their pros and cons against my use cases. On the hunt for a book formatter, I stumbled upon Lacuna in a Reddit thread and it seemed the perfect alternative to its competitors. At first I had questions about some of its features in use, but support was fast to help in my case! And supporting a smaller company really is the best; the more alternatives, the better.

A child divided. The horrid boons of deceit. Two lives in one body. Death of the grandmother cell. Cleansers and balms that free the trapped soul. The identity of time and the quick end of humanity.

From the deadly time travel of “Apiolitis,” to the gender-altering technology of “Ms. Watch,” to a psychiatrist who must wrestle with erasing memories in “The sins of Amaya Hearth,” each tale puts theory to the test.

In these twelve ironic and original stories, Henthrik R. Devakumar explores the lines where technology blurs with belief—and where one must draw the line.

FROM SLAVE TO FREEMAN: A FREEMAN FAMILY HISTORY ON MARTHA’S VINEYARD

by Patricia L. Hetticher

It has been a pleasure using Lacuna Formatting for my latest project. I have published several books with vanity presses in the past and was looking for a way to self-publish with no formatting or cover design experience. Your software was perfect for a novice like me. It was also my first nonfiction book, and I encountered no problems. I have recommended it to multiple writer friends and relatives. I look forward to formatting with Lacuna on my next two projects.

A daring escape.
A new beginning.
The year was 1787.
The lives of runaway slaves John and Priscilla Saunders had a profound impact on the island of their new home, Martha’s Vineyard. FROM SLAVE TO FREEMAN is a multifaceted family legacy of African American, Wampanoag Native, and spiritual heritage which is still alive today on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. It is a history fraught with political and social battles, as well as the faith needed to endure them. Though the Island has evolved over the centuries, the fight for justice has remained, year after year, for the Wampanoag tribes who live and meet there. Through powwows, festivals, and clambakes, they carry on the culture of their ancestors and share their rich history with Island visitors.

There’s Magic in the Mundane

by M. McChristen

I had some experience formatting things for print in the past, but I had done it manually which took days to complete. For my debut novel, I went looking for something that was easy and intuitive to use instead. When I found Lacuna, I thought I hit a gold mine! The free trial was perfect for learning what the software could do before I committed to the purchase, which made me want to support the program even more.

With Lacuna, I formatted my book in a matter of minutes. It was like magic! Lacuna removed the uncertainty from the entire formatting process, and I’ve recommended it so many times in my writing group, they think I’m sponsored!

After a life-altering setback returns him to his hometown of Flagstaff, Arizona, Alex Findley is determined to live a predictable and mundane life.

Until he meets his new coworker, Ann Summerfield.

She’s cheerful; she’s competitive; and worst of all—she wants to spend time with him.

When Alex discovers a mysterious magic staff in a nearby pond, it triggers anxiety-inducing visions, interdimensional travel, and a power that everyone except him seems to want.

Stuck in worlds far from home, Alex will need to confront his self-doubt—and his growing feelings for Ann—if there’s any chance of returning to his once-cherished routine.

The Baseline Method

by Clifton P. Dail

After struggling with multiple formatting tools that promised an easy solution but never delivered, I finally found Lacuna. The tutorials were clear, practical, and easy to follow, and for the first time, the entire formatting process actually made sense. I was able to create a polished book with images, callout boxes, custom text formatting, and working links, exactly as I envisioned. Instead of wasting hours trying to fix formatting problems, I was able to focus on producing a professional-quality manuscript. Lacuna gave me the confidence to produce a professional-quality manuscript, and seeing my book published made all the effort worthwhile. I know I’ve only scratched the surface of what it can do, and it has already earned a permanent place in my publishing toolkit.

A sharp, practical guide to spotting deception through baseline behavior, body language shifts, verbal inconsistencies, and high-pressure communication patterns in negotiations, interviews, and everyday professional conversations.

Galeas the Keen: Out of True, #4

by Rien Gray

For years, I had been paying out of pocket to have my books formatted as the gold standard software was out of my reach as a PC user. Lacuna changed that! Both their ebook and print formatting is intuitive, and their support has been very responsive whenever there are any hiccups. They were willing to add extra print measurements for me in order to create mass market paperbacks, and the resulting print copies are lovely. I highly recommend the software for any self-pub author who wants to take control of creating their books without expensive cloud subscriptions or AI features that have stolen from other artists’ work, especially since Lacuna keeps my writing private and safe without any restrictions.

As the youngest knight in the court of Afallennau, Galeas serves as Her Majesty’s voice. Born blind, Galeas is known for her kindness and untarnished virtue, using her words and intuition to handle matters of diplomacy throughout the realm.

When King Theomacha sends her to a village that appears to be slowly drowning, Galeas is shocked to hear this impending disaster may be the work of the House of Corbenic, whose guilds are responsible for every architectural and creative art in the kingdom. How would their notoriously brilliant guildmistress, Lady Belakané, benefit from flooding the river Fand and rending nature asunder?

Accompanied by her legendary guide and steed, Hengroen, Galeas quests past the flood to the House of Corbenic and meets Belakané’s only daughter, Liban, whose injury in her youth has shattered her faith in love and loyalty. That, and a mysterious curse that bleeds water from her skin, one that may swallow the world entire if left unchecked.

Haunted by images of lost oceans and a relic that erases itself from the memories of outsiders, Galeas must break the curse, save Liban, and confront an unthinkable question: what if King Theomacha has been lying to her from the very beginning?

Mermaid Lessons

by Julia Jameson

Lacuna is frankly the first and last word in desktop book formatting for Windows users, and an absolute no-brainer for anyone who wants a professional-looking manuscript; nothing else even comes close. It scales beautifully whether you’re on your first book or your fiftieth, handles weird edge cases like series boxsets, text conversations and full-page images, and is delightfully robust and sane to use.

And if you do manage to find something Lacuna can’t do yet, send the team an email - it won’t be ignored! Support is crazy fast and friendly, and my hopeful request for a brand new feature was shipped in the very next update. This is a small, speedy company, and boy does it show.

If you’re on the fence, try the free trial version. You’ve literally got nothing to lose - except the license fee you’ll inevitably end up purchasing, because your books will look so much better.

What happens when the man who can’t swim falls for the woman who keeps him afloat?

Casey Cunningham has a cabin the size of a generous coffin, a porthole sealed with marine tape, and a job she secretly loves — teaching six-year-olds to blow bubbles and pretend they’re mermaids on the cruise liner Pacific Jewel.

At twenty-two, she’s escaped small-town Oregon, her mother’s quiet disappointment, and a community college degree she finished but never used. The ocean is her whole world now, and she’s learned to keep her loneliness tucked somewhere below the waterline where it doesn’t show.

So when her boss assigns her to private swimming lessons with a VIP passenger, Casey expects some wealthy retiree afraid of the deep end.

She does not expect Chris Haymarket.

As in that Chris Haymarket — the superhero franchise guy, the one three separate magazines have named the most attractive person alive, the man who looks like someone Photoshopped a human being and then gave him a twenty-million-dollar smile.

He’s charming. Self-deprecating. Clearly used to winning people over in seconds.

And he is genuinely terrified of water...

My Life as a Notary Signing Agent in Today’s Gig Economy

by Suzi Lee McMullen

I used Lacuna to format my book, My Life as a Notary Signing Agent in Today’s Gig Economy, and I couldn’t be happier with the experience. The software was easy to learn, user-friendly, and included everything I needed to create both print and eBook versions in multiple sizes and formats. When it came time to upload my files to Amazon, the process was completely smooth with no formatting issues at all. If you’re looking for an affordable, straightforward formatting program that covers the essentials without a steep learning curve, I would definitely recommend Lacuna. Daughter of Chaos (Lost Goddess Series)

Lacuna was by far the easiest formatting software I attempted to use for my debut novel, and I attempted at least three others before settling on Lacuna. I really enjoyed the free trial offered prior to having to pay for it. This allowed me to get a real feel for the software without having to go through the hoops of finding out who to email about a refund should I dislike it. I also loved the fact that I could add a cute ’ornamental break’ that is already connected to the software instead of having to use three dots or have my own made to mark time passing between scenes. You wouldn’t believe how uncommon that is to have offered within these softwares. Overall, Lacuna made formatting my very first book easy and enjoyable, and I will be using them for a long time to come!

Vera spent her entire life pretending the darkness inside her doesn’t exist.

Raised among The Mother’s Guardian’s - an elite order descended from Gods and trained to kill without mercy - she learned early that weakness is dangerous, obedience is survival, and monsters are never spared.

Which is a problem when there’s something beneath her skin that’s terrifyingly alive.

But it’s the God in the shadows who truly unsettles her.

There’s something dangerous about the way he watches her, as if he can see through the walls she’s spent years building. Every encounter leaves her feeling exposed, off-balance, and terrifyingly understood.

With each new piece found and every salacious whisper from the God trying to possess her, she begins to fear that the darkness inside of her isn’t something to suppress . . . it’s something waiting to be set free.

The Knights

by Bibi Lybaek

As a lifelong Windows user, I’ve been jealous of Vellum users for years. When I finally started formatting my own books, I invested in Atticus, but it never quite lived up to my expectations. Then I discovered Lacuna, and I honestly can’t see myself going back.

Before buying it, I put the trial through its paces to see what it could really do. It’s incredibly intuitive, easy to use, and just makes the whole formatting process feel effortless. So far, I’ve been genuinely impressed. 😍

Every Knight generation needs three children. Because only one survives.

It’s just a family superstition. That’s what the Knights tell themselves. But in their world of contracts, hunters, and blood debts, superstitions have a way of coming true. Three siblings. Three seasons. Three obsessions.

Bought by Santa:
Two Santas executing a man in the snow was not something I ever thought I’d see. Yet that’s what happened when I left the club with the man I was about to baby trap. Nicklas Knight sees my captivity as the answer to his twisted prayers. He needs a breeder, and I need money. Spending December in this Mafia Santa’s bed isn’t the worst thing... right?

Hunted by Valentine:
My bastard husband was too much of a coward to kill me himself. So he hired the notorious Hunter of New York City. I should be terrified of Valentine Grant. But for the first time in my caged life, I feel alive. That’s the cruelest part because in our world, love doesn’t survive. Neither do I.

Tricked by Jack:
A masked stranger knocked on my door at midnight, and like the doomed girl in every horror movie, I let him in. Now I’m a bride at Sanctuary of Shadows—a gothic carnival where Jack Knight doesn’t need me to say “I do.”

Three dark mafia standalones. One overarching plot. One family superstition the Knights should have taken seriously.

Contains two HEAs and one tragedy. For mature audiences only!!

3-Minute Wrestling Devotionals for Rising Athletes

by NextGen Victory Press

I originally checked out Lacuna because somebody in a KDP publishing group I belong to asked if anyone had tried Lacuna out yet. I  published nine other books using a different formatter, but I wasn’t happy with it. I ended up taking a look at Lacuna even though I was pretty much sold on Atticus or Vellum. Once I started diving into Lacuna and saw the ease of use and flexibility, I was absolutely floored. It was a no-brainer, and I purchased Lacuna. Since then the program has only improved. Corey is amazing at fixing things and streamlining processes.

If you take a look at the book that I formatted with Lacuna you will see, it would be pretty difficult to do something like that with one of those other formatting programs. Plus they cost more. In my opinion Lacuna is already the best formatter on the market and only getting better. Thanks, Corey and Melissa, for making this available.

3-Minute Wrestling Devotionals for Rising Athletes is a great gift for any wrestler dealing with the pressure of competition and the emotions that come with it.

This book features 64 weekly devotionals with real-life stories of Christian wrestlers who faced adversity and came out stronger on the other side.

Each devotional only takes about 3 minutes per week, so they fit into busy schedules.

The Book of Isaiah: A Verse-by-Verse Study

by Daniel Moore

I have used Reedsy, Atticus, and Lacuna, and Lacuna by far is my favorite! It is constantly being updated with bug fixes and new features. An update caused a bug in my software, and I reached out, and it was fixed by the next day. The best customer service ever! The formatter does everything you need to format your book with a click of the mouse, and I love that Grammarly integrates seamlessly for my editing. I am currently formatting my next book with this software as well. This will be my permanent formatting software for sure; this is an excellent piece of software! The first book I have formatted with this is a verse-by-verse study of Isaiah, the first 39 chapters. This book is 752 pages long, and the software handled it without issue.

My book is a verse-by-verse study of the Book of Isaiah. It comes from a historical and Biblical mindset with heavy use of commentaries from many scholars. It is beautifully formatted with verse-by-verse explanations, verse sections and chapter summaries, and an application for today at the end of each chapter. This book also has over 130 illustrations. This is a good resource for anyone doing an Isaiah study or just wanting to know more about the prophetic book. It is available anywhere you can get books online in paperback, hardback, and Kindle (on Amazon).

Indian Summer

by Ib Svane

After struggling with manuscript formatting on Amazon and Ingram Spark, someone mentioned Lacuna formatting software. I tried it and instantly discovered that it was the software I needed. One thing is to format a manuscript, but Lacuna opens an easy gate to design and ethical considerations. Thank you.

The story is about getting a second chance at life, experienced as the beauty of an “Indian summer” with its beautiful autumn colours. But that can only happen after a snap frost — the killing frost!

Peter’s Indian wife, Isabella, abandoned him and their two-year-old son, joining her tribe to become the shaman and El Curandera. Her tribe, the Tarahumara, lives in the Sierra Madre, under the drug cartel’s murderous rule. Peter returned to Australia with his son, Ron. Years later, Peter’s daughter Mary’s husband, John, a psychologist, is arrested for abusing female patients. Mary divorces him.

Her mother’s death gives Mary a feeling of freedom, but a chilling, killing frost blown into her life — the enduring madness of her ex-husband. Mary inherits a company, Columbus Enterprises. She learns Ron is adopted and must travel to the Cayman Islands. Ron searched for his mother.

As a literary editor, Mary travels to the Edinburgh Writers’ Festival. Here, she meets Oscar, a Swedish aero-engineer. Mary invites Oscar to join her on the trip to the Cayman Islands, leading to a lasting love affair. Ron believes Isabella is his mother.

Mary is imprisoned and drugged by her ex-husband John, who is involved with the Sonoran Drug Cartel. Ron finds his Indian heritage and his destiny. The showdown with John happens in the Sierra Madre Mountains. Mary bravely faces her tormentor, strengthened by her newfound love.

The software is amazing! Lacuna literally saved my book launch. It’s so easy to use, even for a non-tech person like me. The team is incredibly kind and responsive. They added features based on my needs and fixed my issues in less than a day. I could go on and on praising this formatting software. My book looks so beautiful, both the EPUB and print PDF versions. They also keep adding new, stunning features with smooth updates. It’s honestly the best investment I’ve made so far in my author journey.

She swore she’d never forgive him.
